Evaluation
DETECTION or SCREENING:
Both types of services are available for preschools and schools so as to provide support for children who have difficulty obtaining early intervention services.
FORMAL EVALUATION:
The process for a comprehensive assessment in occupational therapy includes the assessment of the baby/child/teen’s functioning in:
- his daily activities including self-care (eating, dressing, hygiene);
- activities related to learning at home, at preschool, at school or in a pre/vocational setting;
- his skills and his/her participation in play and recreational activities.
In addition, sensory skills and motor skills (gross and fine motor skills), perceptive-cognitive skills and social skills as well as the environment in which the young person evolves (physical, social and cultural environment) are evaluated in order to identify the factors contributing to their difficulties in participating in daily occupations as expected at their age.
The objective of the evaluation may be a global evaluation (e.g. difficulty in the day-to-day functioning) or an evaluation targeting a specific problem (e.g. difficulty of writing).
A written report provides an analysis of the assessment results and an occupational therapy intervention plan. The objectives of the intervention plan are prioritized with the clients and the frequency of intervention sessions is discussed.
